Memories + Pregame

Before the relisten. Memory is allowed to be wrong.

Demo content. Placeholder memories to show the format.

My dad had this on cassette in the car and would fast-forward through "Darling Nikki" with his thumb on the button and his eyes on the road. So naturally that was the first one I sought out.

What I think I remember: the whole record is short and every song is a single. "Computer Blue" is the one I forget exists. The title track is nine minutes long and I have never once skipped it, which does not stop me from thinking it might be a little overrated. We will see.

Tuesday

3-Spin Diary

Three times through. Back-to-back-to-back. Notes as they happened.

Spin 1

Instinct

Demo diary entry. "Dearly beloved." That's the whole review, honestly.

"Take Me with U" is a much better song than its reputation. I forgot the drum sound on this record is so dry and huge at the same time.

Spin 2

Discovery

Demo diary entry. Headphones spin.

The keyboard voicings on "The Beautiful Ones" are doing an enormous amount of work. "Computer Blue" is a better song than a skip, it just lives between two giants. The transition from "Darling Nikki" backmasking into "When Doves Cry" is sequencing as a flex.

Spin 3

Conviction

Demo diary entry. Third spin.

Nothing faded. "Computer Blue" climbed. "Baby I'm a Star" climbed. The title track is exactly as good as everyone says and I am withdrawing "overrated" before Wednesday so it cannot be held against me.

Thursday

Overreaction

You heard us. Now tell us why we're wrong.

We called Purple Rain (the song) slightly overrated. The audience response was not kind.

Demo content. Placeholder Thursday post.

The audience beat us by nine points, and the mail was unified on one topic: we should not have said the word "overrated" within a mile of the title track, even in a Pregame, even as a joke. Noted.

From the audience

  • Calling the title track overrated is a cry for help.
